Sor’s Magic Flute Variations — without nails

This extraordinary video deserves a post of its own. Here is Jon Mendle playing Sor’s most famous piece, Introduction, Theme and Variations on a Theme of Mozart, op. 9. He is using a guitar from c. 1830, with gut strings, and is following Sor’s no-nail technique. A must watch:

Wow! What a rendition! I am no great specialist on Sor, I’ve only played and listened to some of his pieces for a few decades, the vast majority of which played with nails on a modern classical guitar, but for me, Jon Mendle’s is among the very best Sors I’ve heard! He conjures up a “historic” atmosphere that I can very well imagine might have been around when Sor wrote that very music. Totally “in the mood”, especially as it’s also played on a period instrument. Mr Mendle truly deserves that slot among your https://nonailguitar.com/recordings/

    Cheers, serge

    1. Ah, you noticed I updated that page! Yes he very much deserves it; I hope many thousands see/hear the recording. Should be at the next meetup — see you there if so.

John Mendle is a personal favorite. (AustinMarireGuitars. Com) His interpretations are spot on. With the Emilio Pujol adoration of Sor, it would be interesting to see if Pujol made notes specific to this wonderful work. Thank you for sharing this. Measured, elegant, and Sors fingerings and right hand accuracy. Bravo

    1. A curious question. I can’t recall any writings in which Pujol discusses specific Sor works? I’ll have a little search tomorrow.

They were the notes by E. PUJOL given to H. GARCIA from their time together and his interchanges. It is tge sane as Book 5 which has not been released due to squabbling as to ownership rights.

Keep in mind Hector Garcia had a vast grouping of information from Pujol.

          3. Ah yes, hopefully the material will be archived sometime. I’ve had no luck getting hold of any of it.
