Combining flesh and nail?

The nail and no-nail schools of playing are not entirely discrete categories. When nearly all modern nail players strike the string, they use a combination of flesh and nail. Moreover, there have been players who have used nails on their fingers but flesh alone on the thumb (Aguado et al.), and players who used flesh alone on their fingertips but nail on the thumb (Fortea et al.) Even those of us who only touch the string with the flesh of our fingertips are still, in fact, making some of use of the nail: it forms part of the support structure of the fingertip, alone with the bone, giving strength to the stroke. There are things each school can potentially learn and adopt from each other. In this spirit, I hope this website will be useful to those playing with nails, just as I hope it is to those playing without.
