Duo Savigni (19th century guitar & fortepiano) have a new album out. It’s an absolutely blast, from beginning to end. Enrica’s playing — on a period instrument, gut strings, no nails — is extraordinary. A must listen!

I made a video on the surprising history of plucking the string with the little finger. This is something that can be done by both nail and flesh players, though I think it can be especially advantageous for flesh players:

And one more of my videos. Terribly self-indulgent, but what can I say, it is my site! I’ve finally got round to trying gut strings again, this time on my 19th century guitar. On modern guitars, I’m perfectly happy with nylon strings (though it’s been a long while since I tried gut on one). But I have to say, on a period instrument, there is something more beautiful about gut. This guitar is a real treat and I’m grateful to have it:
